Position categories

Positions are offered in the following categories:

Full professor: implies a consolidated teaching and research career. This is the category under contract that corresponds to the most advanced stage of one's teaching career; a permanent contract is given. In order to be hired as such, one must hold a doctoral qualification, three years of accredited teaching and research activity, and an accreditation in advanced research from the Catalan University Quality Assurance Agency (AQU Catalunya).

Associate professor/Senior lecturer: implies proven ability to teach and undertake research. This is the first of the upper-level categories under permanent contract. In order to be hired as such, one must hold a doctoral qualification, three years of accredited teaching and research activity, and an accreditation in research from the Catalan University Quality Assurance Agency.

Tenure-track full professor: a fixed-term visiting lecturer contract is awarded. This is a full-time contract for a period determined in the specific offer. In order to be hired in this category, the candidate must hold a doctoral qualification and have a scientific career similar to that required to obtain an accreditation in advanced research from the Catalan University Quality Assurance Agency (AQU Catalunya). At the end of the contract, the university undertakes to offer a permanent contract as full professor, provided that the visiting lecturer has passed an assessment of his or her work, which will take place in the last year of the fixed-term contract. To pass this assessment, the visiting lecturer must have obtained an accreditation in advanced research from AQU Catalunya, with a minimum mark of 60 out of 100; in addition, he or she must have accumulated sufficient merits for the international selection committee that proposed him or her as a tenure-track full professor to back his or her becoming permanent.

Tenure-track associate professor: This is the introductory category to a teaching career, and a fixed-term contract is given as a lecturer (Law 1/2003 of 19 February governing Catalan Universities). This is a full-time contract for a period of no more than five years. In order to be hired as such, one must hold a doctoral qualification and have received a favourable report from the Catalan University Quality Assurance Agency (AQU Catalunya). At the end of the contract, the university undertakes to offer a permanent contract as associate professor provided that the professor has passed an assessment of his or her work, which will take place in the last year of the fixed-term contract. To pass this assessment, the professor must have obtained an accreditation in research from AQU Catalunya, with a minimum mark of 60 out of 100; in addition, he or she must have accumulated sufficient merits for the international selection committee that proposed him or her as a tenure-track associate professor to back his or her becoming permanent.
